La Galerie UQAM brings together artists Roger Aksadjuak, Shuvinai Ashoona, Pierre Aupilardjuk, Shary Boyle, Jessie Kenalogak, John Kurok, and Leo Napayok in a group exhibit titled “Earthlings.” These seven artists showcase individual work as well as collaborations. The exhibit features drawings, paintings, and sculptures, all focusing on transformed bodies and the space they occupy. The show was curated by Toronto artist Shary Boyle, who also has work being shown at the exhibit, as she brings together six Inuit artists.
The theme of transformation is key here as a lot of the work presented was made through a collaborative process, with each artist leaving their trace and moulding the work in their respective ways. Shuvinai Ashoona and Shary Boyle created multiple collaborative drawings in 2015. Each artist started three drawings and then sent them to the other for completion. Five of these drawings are now part of Earthlings.
In September 2016, Pierre Aupilardjuk, Shary Boyle, and John Kurok did a month long residency at the Medalta Centre in Alberta, where they produced multiple collaborative and individual ceramic works which are shown in the Earthlings exhibit alongside works produced by Roger Aksadjuak and collaborative works by John Kurok. and Leo Napayok.
Earthlings at La Galerie UQAM is on until April 14th, 2018.
